Why does the county owned airport (POV) pay real estate taxes? June 24, 2019

June 24, 2019, Airport real estate taxes

When you mention taxes people usually wince.  Nobody likes to pay taxes.  Here’s some information I’ll bet you didn’t know about taxes the airport pays.

1) How much does the PCRAA (Portage County Regional Airport Authority) pay in real estate taxes?  Taxes that will be paid in 2019 by category are:

2) Why does the airport, a county owned airport, pay real estate taxes?  Back in 2015 or 2016 (the date isn’t important here) the PCRAA filed with the state a request for exemption from real estate taxes on five parcels.  These parcels are, in descriptive terms, the FBO, board owned T-hangars, two board owned hangars on the north side, and the hangars currently rented to Cales Custom Aviation.  The state ruling was made in January, 2017.  Here is a link to a file containing the five rulings: https://www.flykpov.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/OhioTaxDeptRuling20170208.pdf
If we had been granted the exemption on these five parcels our tax bill would be $20,253.04 less for 2019.
The rulings reference court cases and basically say that when the airport uses public property for profit (leasing/renting the property) the property is not exempt from taxation.  See excerpt below that appears in all five rulings.
